“Changes” was David Bowie's first U.S. chart hit, debuting at Number 66 on the Billboard Hot 100 in 1971.
It would hit Number 41 four years later, in 1975, after Bowie was a more commercially established artist.
It has become something of a theme song for Bowie, who became known for his stylistic and fashion changes throughout his career.
The Hunky Dory album was his first to feature the players who became known as the Spiders From Mars — Mick Ronson, Trevor Bolder, and Mick Woodsmansey.
The album also featured piano by Rick Wakeman, who would go on to join Yes later that year.
A co-producer mysteriously called “The Actor” on the Hunky Dory credits was actually Bowie.
Hunky Dory was the first Bowie album to make the U.S. chart, peaking at Number 93 on the Billboard 200.
It fared better in the U.K., peaking at Number Three.
Bowie's son, Duncan Zowie Haywood, was born May 28th, 1971, as Bowie was preparing to record Hunky Dory.
